Biography
I trained as a graphic designer and worked for several years as a freelance illustrator in advertising, exhibition and publishing. Over the past couple of years I’ve returned to my own work, and am now showing a collection of mixed media originals and fine art Giclée prints. As a decorative rather than a political artist I find my inspiration comes most often from the natural world. I’ve spent a lot of time working as a gardener and this has given me great delight in the riotous vibrancy and ephemeral qualities of plants and flowers. I am constantly amazed and intrigued them.
I love colour and the way it changes with the light, particularly the effects of weather on skyscapes which are ever changing and hard to capture. For the transition to an artwork I try extremely hard to avoid a tight, realistic representation of the subject matter.
In the case of plants, and flowers in particular, I aim for the ‘essence’ of the subject in colour, form and movement. This follows my exploration of silk painting with its wonderful spontaneity of brushwork and my admiration of the art of Sumi-e painting developed to its heights in Japan. I’ve tried to capture this immediacy and directness whilst using the entirely different medium of torn and manipulated handmade papers.
This technique has produced some very satisfactory results which led me to explore the amazing world of digital reproduction, and my discovery of the fine art process of Giclée printing. These archive quality prints on stretched canvas are what I am now exhibiting. I’m very pleased with the quality and richness of the results.
